In order to complete the story mode for Bear and Breakfast and feed hungry hotel guests, Hank will need a crash course in how to cook.
Cooking is an important skill to learn in Bear and Breakfast. In the three later-game properties, food is necessary for guests to be happy at their lodgings. Hank and Julia will be able to work together to make some stellar meals to fill up hungry human bellies in this relaxing video game.
There are several things that players will need before they can cook in the indie game Bear and Breakfast. Cooking is not unlocked until players reach the autumn-themed section of the map called Highlake. In this location, players will meet a goat woman named Julia, who is a big fan of cooking and teaching others to cook.

To get this NPC to teach Hank everything she knows about kitchens in this Animal Crossing-like game, he will first have to complete a quest for her. She will ask for some sage from Darkgrove for her tea. When Hank brings it back to her, it will unlock the Pawn Voyage kitchen items that can be purchased for coins. For cooking, players will need a kitchen with at least basic items like cutting boards, stoves, and microwaves. In order to give hotel guests access to the food, players will have to build a dining room and put a buffet, chairs, and a table inside of it.
To make room for both of these inside of the Highland building, Hank might have to delete a few Bear and Breakfast rooms. The dining room is a great feature that adds a lot of prestige to buildings, but the kitchen does the exact opposite. Kitchen items are considered ugly by the game, and they will decrease the prestige scores of locations and lower the comfort and decoration scores of anything within range.
This means that it is imperative to keep bedrooms from sharing a wall with any kitchen spaces. Instead, make sure to build a Bear and Breakfast bathroom of dining room against the kitchen instead. There are two ways to handle food at all the locations that Hank manages; players can:
Cooking comes in several levels. Hank starts with basic, level 1 equipment and can upgrade as he unlocks new kitchen appliances at the Pawn Voyage van. Here are all the different levels of kitchen items that can be unlocked. Thankfully, Hank won't need Iron Nails for any of these in Bear and Breakfast.

A great tip for new players to Bear and Breakfast is learning to cook as early as possible. In order to do it, Hank will have to walk up to one of the appliances in any kitchen that he owns (kitchens in the Diner in A24 and in Hank's mom's home cannot be used). All the recipes that Hank has collected or purchased from Julia's recipe store, located next to her home in Highlake, will show up to the right of the screen. Choose a recipe card to start.
Recipe cards will show the ingredient, the number of them needed, and what needs to be done to it. Here is an example of a recipe card in this cooking simulator:
To make French Onion Soup, video game inn keeper Hank will need:
The cards needed to make the soup are:
Drag and drop the required cooking methods into the center from the Methods menu at the bottom. There is a Bear and Breakfast collectible trinket that will do this automatically for Hank, which will speed up this process a lot. Drag and drop the required ingredients into each of the correct cards. Once all the ingredients are dropped into the right cards, the upper right-hand corner will display what will be made and how many will be created. The cooking process will always create the maximum number it can, based on how many of each ingredient were dropped in. For example, if a player is making mashed potatoes:
Hit the Cook button to cook all possible meals. The completed items will then appear in the blank boxes in the middle right, next to the recipes box. Hit "Take All" to move these items from the kitchen into Hank's inventory for the PC game Bear and Breakfast that will soon be coming to Switch.
The vast majority of the recipes in this whimsical video game are unlocked by purchasing them from Julia's store. However, some of the basic recipes are Hank's to start with when he first unlocks cooking. Some are locked behind story quests, but none of the necessary recipes are locked behind side quests, so players will be able to cook every meal even if they don't 100% the game.

In the single-player video game Bear and Breakfast, the scores of each of the recipes denote how much of a score they will add to a buffet when placed in one of its slots. Whether Hank puts just one of the recipe in the buffet or 20, it will still add the same base score to the buffet. Therefore, if players have a foodie with a food score of 24 coming to visit, they will need several different kinds of foods with scores that add up to at least 24. For example:
In order to cook all these delicious meals for all the guests that Hank will get at his properties, players will first need to forage the foods in this video game. Some can be found in stores, but most will be picked up off of the ground or out of trees. Here is a list of where to find everything:
Some items have to be purchased, which would make being able to sell items in Bear and Breakfast a nice change the devs could make.
Bear and Breakfast is available for PC and is coming soon to Switch.
