Eat of the Week: Blacksmith's Vietnamese steak and eggs

Blacksmith's Vietnamese steak and eggs are an all-day favorite.

Every Friday, Chron's food team shares a standout dish from their experiences dining out during the week. Follow along to see why we love these Houston eats.

I am constantly battling the challenge of finding a coffee shop where I love both the coffee and the food menu. Some places have a brew I can't live without, but a sad version of avocado toast, and others have the breakfast tacos I need in my life, but a lackluster coffee bar. And don't get me started on an only-pastry program—this coffee addict needs a savory bite.

Despite the plethora of coffee shops in every neighborhood around town, I find myself returning time and time again to Blacksmith in Montrose, where both the eats and drinks have been unparalleled for 10 years, thanks to longtime coffee guru David Buehrer, and talented chef Erin Smith Feges, who created the shop's opening menu.

Here, coffee cups are giant and served scalding hot, because who wants to waste their morning asking for refills of room temp coffee? Menu items like chilaquiles, biscuits with crème fraîche and jam, and the smoked salmon dill scramble reflect the city's multi-faceted culinary scene. Perhaps the most worthy of them all is the Vietnamese steak and eggs.

Not to take anything away from the bountiful Vietnamese restaurants in town serving traditional bò né, but I'm a big fan of Blacksmith's iteration, and on mornings that may or may not follow a late, booze-fueled night, it's a convenient option.

Blacksmith's Vietnamese steak and eggs was inspired by the hearty brunch dish that Buehrer ate regularly growing up. The sunny side up eggs atop a bed of beef are presented in a mini cast iron skillet, and served with house pâté, a portion of French bread and a side salad. You may pick at all of the components as you wish, but my recommendation is to layer them all together in the bread for one big epic bite after another.

The comfy coffee house is Houston-inspired in both look and feel, with astronaut illustrations among the decor and a diverse menu of all-day eats prominently displayed on the wall. Buehrer intended for the shop's offerings to be a blend of the city's many cultures and cuisines, and as a result, it has been a fixture of the Montrose dining scene for a decade and counting.
